I lost my house keys today. Of all times, it had to happen just three weeks before I move.
I’ve always considered myself a pretty organized person—and I think others see me that way too—but for some reason, about once every six months, I make a massive blunder. Especially since moving to London.
Looking back, my track record is... eventful. A year and a half ago, in the middle of winter, I fell for a phishing scam and lost £2,000 of my savings. Since then, I became so hyper-aware of scams that I ignored a legitimate invoice, thinking it was fake. The result? A late penalty that brought the bill to £500.
The day I lost my keys was equally ironic. There's an app in London called Too Good To Go, where restaurants sell "Surprise Bags" of leftover or near-expiry food at a discount. Since I’m moving soon, I wanted to try a local cafe I’d been curious about. I managed to get a bag of pastries worth £10 for just £3!
I was walking home, feeling so lucky and excited, only to realize... I didn't have my keys. In the short 30 minutes I was out, they had vanished. I retraced my steps and checked the shops, but no luck.
Fortunately, my flatmate was home, so I wasn't locked out, and I was able to get a spare made right away. Still, the replacement cost me about £35.
I’m not sure when I started being like this, but I think I’m just stingy. Of course, "life hacks" and being frugal are essential for surviving in an expensive city like London, but I’ve realized that being too cheap can sometimes backfire. I need to learn when to loosen the purse strings.
