I did two markets at Kings Cross this month. It’s been a little while, but some really wonderful things happened, so I want to write them down.

First of all, I was so happy that my friend stayed with me at my stall the whole time. Henry is my former colleague from my part-time job. He recently left his job and had some free

time. He’d say things like, "I'm just bored," and show up casually, but he ended up staying and helping me out almost the entire time for both markets.

To be honest, doing markets can feel lonely. You sit outside for 7 to 8 hours, constantly presenting your creations. Some days, nothing sells at all, and that’s just sad. Of course, selling isn't everything—talking to customers is a joy—but having a close friend by my side makes such a difference. It helps me stay relaxed while I talk to people. Having someone you trust right next to you is such a huge help.

During the first market, the girl I shared a table with looked familiar. I couldn't help but ask, "Have we met before?" She looked at my face and my jewelry and said, "Oh! I saw TALANTO at a market a year ago, and after talking to Riko, I decided to start making jewelry myself!"

Wow! I was so happy. She was making handmade jewelry using eco-resin, reflectors she found on the street, and flowers. I never imagined that my creations—as an unknown artist from Japan who's only been here for two years—could have the power to inspire someone like that!

As we kept talking, she told me she was moving to the Netherlands the following week, so it was her last market in London. She has roots there but has never lived there, so she was really excited. I was shocked to hear that because I’ve been thinking about moving to Taiwan once my London visa ends. Like her, I have roots in Taiwan but have never lived there. "We were really meant to meet again today," we said, and we ended the day with a hug.

Then, at the second market, something else amazing happened. A customer who came to London from Taiwan on a working holiday visa came specifically to see TALANTO! I told her I had a pop-up in Taipei in 2024, and she said, "I know!" She was the first customer in London who came specifically for "TALANTO." She came with her flatmate, and they looked like such great friends. It was so sweet.

I’ve only been doing this for two years, and I was worried about whether I could keep going after moving to a new place. But these moments made me realize that my work is truly reaching people. I feel so happy.

By the way, Kings Cross is a place full of memories for me. Back in 2022, I spent a month there taking a short course at Central Saint Martins. It felt special to be back.

今月は2回Kings Crossでのマーケットに出店しました。 少し久々だったけれど、実はとても嬉しいことが起きたので書き留めておきます。

まず嬉しかったのは、友達がずっと一緒に店番してくれたこと。 Henryは私のバイト先の元同僚で、最近ちょうど職場を辞めたので時間があるとのこと。 「暇だから〜」とか言ってのっそり来てくれるけど、なんだかんだ2回ともほぼずっと居てくれて、手伝いまで。

マーケットで実は孤独で、一人で外で７〜８時間も座りながら、自分が作ったものをひたすらプレゼンしなきゃいけない。 1日何も売れない日もあるし、そうなるとただ悲しい。

もちろん売れることが全てじゃなくて、お客さんとのコミュニケーションは喜びでもある。 けど友達が横にいて自分もリラックスした状態でお客さんに話しかけられるから、気のしれた人が隣にいてくれるだけでとっても助かるのだ。

そして1回目の時、テーブルをシェアした子が、どこかで見たことある顔だった。 思わず「前に会ったっけ？」と聞いたら、彼女も私の顔とジュエリーを見て、 「あ！私1年前のマーケットでTALANTOを見て、Rikoと話して自分もジュエリー作ってみようと思ったんだよ！」と。

なんとまあ！とっても嬉しかった。 彼女はecoレジンや道で拾った反射板、お花を使ってハンドメイドのジュエリーを作っていた。 ただの2年日本からきた無名の私のクリエイションが、誰かを動かす力を持っているなんて、思いもしなかった！

そして色々話していると、彼女は次の週からNetherlandに引越しをするから、最後のロンドンでのマーケットだそうで。 「Netherlandのルーツは持っているけど、住んだことがなかったから楽しみ！」と言っていた。

私もちょうど、ロンドンのビザが終わったら、台湾に引っ越そうか考えていたところだから、それを聞いてびっくり。 私も同じくルーツはあるのに住んだことはなかった台湾。 本当に私たちは今日会うべきして再会したね、とハグしてマーケットを終えた。

そして2回目のマーケットでは、なんと台湾からロンドンにワーホリに来ているお客さんがTALANTOを見に、来てくれた！ これもとっても嬉しかった。

2024年に台北でpopupをしたんだよ、と伝えたら「知ってるよ！」って。 初めてロンドンで、"TALANTOを"見に来てくれたお客さんだった。 フラットメイトと一緒に来てくれて、とても仲良しそうで可愛かった。

こんな風に、たったの2年だけど、活動場所を移しても続けられるか不安だったけれど、だれかの元に届いてることを実感しました。幸せ。

ちなみにKings Crossは2022年にCentral Saint Martinsにひと月だけコースを受けに通っていて、ちょっとした思い出の場所でもあるのでした。
